The Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) has announced the creation of a Global Health University Clinic in the heart of the Latin Quarter, to be located in the former Archambault building.

This innovative project aims to offer preventative and sustainable health services to the Montreal population through an integrated approach that goes beyond the purely medical dimension.

The clinic will also serve as a unique interprofessional learning environment for UQAM students.

The Project: An Integrated Vision of Health

UQAM's Global Health University Clinic is a flagship project stemming from the University's 2024-2029 Strategic Plan and the vision promoted during the "A New Vision for Health" Summit.

The clinic's approach, inspired notably by Dr. Fabrice Brunet (Associate Vice-Rector for the Development of Health Sciences), is based on a holistic vision that considers the physical, psychological, social, and educational determinants of health.

It focuses on prevention and health maintenance for all individuals, regardless of their health status.

A Strategic Location: The Archambault Building

The Clinic will be established on the upper floors of the former Archambault building, at the intersection of Sainte-Catherine and Berri Streets.

This location in the heart of the Latin Quarter is strategic for serving the community and participating in the socio-economic revival of the area.

Gathering of Expertise

The initiative brings together the expertise of various faculties, particularly human sciences and educational sciences, going beyond traditional health disciplines.

It will integrate existing university clinics, such as the Orthopedagogical Services Centre and the Career Clinic, and could accommodate other teaching clinics, such as a future speech-language pathology clinic.

Timeline (Estimated)

  • Announcement and Formalization: The project was formalized in October 2025, during the "A New Vision for Health" Summit.

  • Implementation: The Clinic is bringing together already active entities (Orthopedagogical Services Centre, Career Clinic), suggesting a gradual implementation of services and interprofessional collaborations.

Allocated Budgets

Public information does not yet specify the dedicated budget for the Global Health University Clinic.

However, it is clear that the project benefits from a major institutional investment by UQAM for the development of health sciences (2024-2029 Strategic Plan), including investments in infrastructure (fitting out the Archambault building) and human resources (inter-faculty collaboration and training programs).

Impacts

  1. Social Impact:

    • Access to Care: It offers health and support services based on a global and preventive approach directly to citizens, thereby meeting community needs.

    • Service to the Population: It embodies UQAM's commitment to being rooted in service to the Montreal community, particularly that of the Latin Quarter.

    • Innovative Model: It aims to create a sustainable health model that could inspire other initiatives in Quebec.

  2. Economic Impact:

    • Latin Quarter Revitalization: The establishment of the clinic in the Archambault building directly contributes to the revitalization and economic dynamism of the Latin Quarter by attracting new clientele and an increased university presence.

    • Training the Next Generation: It trains the next generation of health professionals with interprofessional skills, thus meeting the future needs of the labour market in a constantly evolving sector.
