New initiatives to liven up public spaces are announced by the council of the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough.
During the last monthly meeting, the borough council gave the go-ahead for the creation of the 'Parcours des pois plumes', a colorful and accessible recreational circuit intended for children on bicycles and scooters in the Parc-Extension neighborhood.
This pilot project for reclaiming public space will take shape near the Saint-Pierre-Apôtre school and will challenge the skills of the local youth in a lively, colorful, and welcoming public space.
Bumps, hoops, and other 'pumptrack' type modules will be present, offering an active and daring play area for children aged 2 to 12.
These new developments will result in the closure of Clark Street between Bellarmin and Saint-Urbain Streets.
In parallel, the pedestrianization of Rue De Castelnau is returning for summer 2025, and the council has designated the Villeray Commercial Development Society (SDC) as the organizer for the 2025 edition.
Having repeatedly demonstrated its ability to deploy events and outdoor setups, the SDC will be responsible for the project this year.
The borough will continue to oversee certain responsibilities, particularly concerning traffic and site maintenance, and will provide the SDC with a financial contribution of $83,500 for the realization of this event, including the establishment of a unique and attractive setup and the deployment of a summer cultural program.
The council adopted in second reading a draft regulation aimed at buildings located in flood-prone areas to protect them against the risks of flooding. Flood-prone areas are those where water is likely to accumulate when the maximum retention capacity of the soil and vegetation is reached during heavy rainfall.
The new regulation will strengthen the resilience of buildings to these weather events in higher-risk areas,
Following the example of other Montreal boroughs that have adopted similar regulations, including Verdun, Ville-Marie, Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, and Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve.
‘’ With the future Parcours des pois plumes, we encourage children to move, run, and roll safely. At the same time, the pedestrianization on De Castelnau is returning and I can't wait for families, the residents of the neighborhood to fully enjoy it!’’ said Laurence Lavigne Lalonde, mayor of the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough.
