The redevelopment of Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal transforms the visitor
experience into a sensory and spiritual journey.
This project combines heritage, sustainability, and innovation to revive one of
Montreal's most iconic sites.
A Sacred Place, A Contemporary Vision
Perched on the slope of Mount Royal, Saint Joseph's Oratory is more than a religious monument: it is a symbol of faith, culture, and gathering.
With over two million visitors each year, it deserved a welcome experience worthy of its reputation.
It is in this spirit that the Lemay firm envisioned a respectful, immersive, and profoundly human redevelopment project.
Architecture Rooted in the Landscape
The new welcome pavilion, LEED Silver certified, blends discreetly into the site's topography. Built with recycled materials, including stones extracted from Mount Royal, it opens onto a series of terraces, green roofs, and sacred gardens.
The architecture guides visitors in a gradual ascent to the sanctuary, punctuated by natural light, warm wood, and soothing views.
Restored Sound and Visual Heritage
The carillon tower, composed of 61 bells, has been restored to become a sound and visual landmark. It embodies the living memory of the place while fitting into a contemporary approach to heritage enhancement.
An Internationally Acclaimed Project
Recognized with several awards for excellence in design and architecture, the Saint Joseph's Oratory redevelopment project is celebrated for its ability to combine spirituality, sustainability, and innovation.
It redefines the welcome in places of worship and inspires a new way of experiencing heritage spaces.
