Montreal is taking another step toward active mobility by launching construction to extend the Côte-Sainte-Catherine bike path to Mont-Royal Avenue.
This project fills a crucial gap between the Outremont and Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhoods, making cycling safer and more accessible in an area that was previously unfriendly to cyclists.
As part of its efforts to make the city more bike-friendly, the City of Montreal has announced the extension of the Côte-Sainte-Catherine bike path to Mont-Royal Avenue.
This segment, long considered a weak point in the city’s cycling network, will finally be secured and integrated into the broader system
.
The project aims to connect two densely populated neighborhoods with high cyclist traffic: Outremont and the Plateau-Mont-Royal.
Until now, cyclists had to navigate poorly adapted and sometimes dangerous streets to cross this area.
The extension will provide a smooth, safe, and accessible cycling route for everyone, including families and less experienced riders.
This initiative is part of Montreal’s broader vision to encourage active transportation and reduce car dependency.
In addition to promoting sustainable mobility, the new bike link will help ease traffic congestion and improve air quality.
The work will include the installation of protected one-way bike lanes, updated signage, and the addition of street furniture and greenery to enhance the user experience.
According to the City’s projections, the project should be completed by the end of the year.
Cycling groups and local residents have welcomed the extension, seeing it as a concrete step toward a greener, safer, and more livable city.
