Montreal's Saint-Michel district is undergoing a transformation with the launch of an ambitious plan,
developed through extensive stakeholder consultation, which aims to improve access to resources, promote active living, strengthen safety, and plan for a socio-ecological transition
The Saint-Michel neighborhood in Montreal is about to undergo a major transformation with the launch of the Strategic Neighborhood Plan – Vision 2032.
This recently unveiled plan aims to develop a long-term social development vision based on broad stakeholder consultation, including citizens, institutions, and community organizations.
An Inclusive and Collaborative Process
The creation of this plan began in October 2023 with the review of the previous plan (2020-2024).
The process spanned several months and involved extensive mobilization. Anyone interested in neighborhood issues could participate.
Dominique Perrault, Executive Director of the Vivre Saint-Michel en santé (VSMS) neighborhood table, emphasizes that the plan was not drafted solely by this table.
A strategic planning committee was formed, including citizens, institutions, and organizations, which enriched the discussion and enabled the development of an ambitious and innovative collective vision for the neighborhood.
Four Major Transformations
The plan is structured around four major transformations that will guide the neighborhood's development:
1. Promote access to resources and services: Guarantee residents welcoming, accessible, equitable, and inclusive services that meet their needs and foster their development.
2. Promote an active life for all: Encourage physical, social, intellectual, emotional, cultural, professional, and political development so that everyone can reach their full potential.
3. Improve actual and perceived safety in the neighborhood: Implement measures to strengthen residents' safety and sense of security.
4. Plan for the socio-ecological transition: Transform lifestyles to address environmental issues and ensure sustainable development.
A Community-Driven Project
The final result is presented as a neighborhood project of unprecedented scope aimed at profoundly transforming the social fabric of Saint-Michel.
This ambitious plan aims to realize the vision of a neighborhood that is "promising, engaged, supportive, and inclusive." Dominique Perrault emphasizes the importance of milestones, key moments, assessments, and actions to be taken to achieve these objectives.
This is a promising initiative that mobilizes local expertise and citizen engagement to create a better future for all neighborhood residents.
