The borough of Lachine is set to welcome a new public park on land generously donated by the Sisters of Sainte-Anne.
This project, the result of a partnership between the religious community and the City of Montreal, aims to preserve an exceptional natural space while honoring the history and social commitment of the sisters.
Lachine is about to enrich its green heritage thanks to a gesture filled with generosity and vision.
The Sisters of Sainte-Anne, who have been present in the borough for over 170 years, have decided to donate a large plot of land located at the corner of Saint-Joseph Boulevard and 32nd Avenue to the public.
This site, home to a mature urban forest, will become a public park accessible to all.
This donation reflects a desire for intergenerational transmission and environmental preservation.
The 2.5-hectare site represents a true green lung in the heart of Lachine.
It will offer residents a space for relaxation, walking, and connection with nature, while contributing to urban biodiversity.
The park project will be developed in collaboration with the local community.
A public consultation process is planned to define the amenities that will best meet the needs of residents.
The borough is committed to honoring the spirit of the donation by highlighting the site's educational and social vocation.
Lachine Mayor Maja Vodanovic praised this exceptional gesture:
“This gift is an act of love for the community. It reminds us of the importance of protecting our natural spaces and building sustainable and inclusive living environments.”
This new park adds to the many greening projects currently underway in the borough.
Ongoing Projects Include:
The transformation of Brewster Park into a sponge park (August 2024 to June 2025), designed to better manage stormwater and promote biodiversity.
The refurbishment of Grovehill Park, including volleyball and basketball courts and a skateboarding area (Summer 2025).
The creation of a community garden on the Sisters of Sainte-Anne’s land, complementing the future park, planned for summer and fall 2025.
The planning of two new parks: one on the Jenkins site and another dog park at the Rockfield Basin.
The landscaping of Quai 34, a participatory project transforming a riverside space into an ecological relaxation area starting in spring 2025.
These projects reflect the borough’s clear intention to make Lachine a model of sustainable urban planning, where nature, heritage, and quality of life coexist harmoniously.
