The borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve has kicked off construction of the
future Place des Commerçantes, a public space located at the corner of Hochelaga and
Des Ormeaux streets.

This project, valued at over $3.3 million and developed with citizen participation, aims to
revitalize the commercial heart of Tétreaultville while honoring the women entrepreneurs of
the neighborhood.

On May 23, 2025, in the presence of Mayor Pierre Lessard-Blais and Member of Parliament Karine Boivin-Roy, the borough of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve officially launched the construction of Place des Commerçantes.

Located at the intersection of Hochelaga and Des Ormeaux streets, this new public square is set to become a landmark gathering place for relaxation and commercial vitality in the Tétreaultville neighborhood.

The result of a participatory process involving over 1,000 residents, the name of the square pays tribute to the essential role of women in the local economy. “From its design to the selection of its name, Place des Commerçantes was shaped and chosen by the citizens of the neighborhood,” emphasized Mayor Lessard-Blais.

The project, representing an investment of more than $3.3 million, includes:

• A round plaza surrounded by benches to host activities and small events;

• Urban furniture designed for social interaction and relaxation;

• Water jets, misting stations, and a drinking fountain for refreshment;

• Appropriate lighting and generous greenery with trees and shrubs;

• Drainage curbs for environmentally friendly stormwater management.

• The work will begin with excavation, followed by upgrades to underground infrastructure (water and sewage), and then surface development.

Installation of furniture and planting will complete the project.

The initiative is financially supported by the Government of Quebec as part of the “Mesure de l’Est,” a program aimed at improving quality of life and the appeal of eastern Montreal.
