The Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough has announced the creation of a new public square in the heart of Tétreaultville.
This project aims to revitalize the area and provide residents with a space for relaxation and gathering. The square will be equipped with urban furniture, water jets, misters, and significant greenery.
Construction will begin in the spring of 2025 and is expected to be completed by September of the same year.
On February 26, 2025, the Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough unveiled plans for a new public square to be developed in the heart of Tétreaultville.
Located at the corner of Des Ormeaux and Hochelaga streets, this new square aims to energize the area and highlight the commercial artery.
It will provide residents with a place for relaxation and gathering that reflects the people of Mercier.
Planned Developments
The new public square will be equipped with various elements to ensure the comfort and safety of visitors.
Urban furniture: Tables, umbrellas, and benches surrounding a round square will be installed to accommodate future events.
Water jets and misters: To refresh visitors during hot summer days.
Drinking fountain: To provide a source of drinking water accessible to all.
Lighting: A modern lighting system will be implemented to enhance the safety of the area.
Greening: A significant increase in greening is planned, including drainage protrusions for optimal rainwater management.
Public consultation
In the fall of 2023, a public consultation was organized to gather residents' opinions on the elements to be included in the design of the new square.
The designers took into account the feedback from citizens and partners, incorporating shading structures, robust and easy-to-maintain furniture, and reducing mineral surfaces.
The integration of trees and shrubs, as well as the creation of adequate and safe lighting, were also taken into consideration.
Toponymic Survey
A toponymic survey is underway to determine the name of the new public square.
Four choices have been submitted to the public: Azilda-Brassard Square, Laura-Charbonneau Square, Michèle-Lalonde Square, or Merchants' Square.
The public's choice will be revealed in spring 2025.
The construction of the new public square will begin in spring and will be completed by September 2025.
This project is being carried out in accordance with the Master Plan for parks and green spaces, the MHM Climate Plan, and Montreal 2030.
The developments are also designed with a focus on ADS+ and will offer universal access.
The Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough is proud of this initiative which promises to transform the heart of Tétreaultville into a welcoming, pleasant, and friendly space for all residents.
