As the beautiful season approaches, the community gardens of Montreal are getting ready to open their doors.
The demand for these gardens is very high and exceeds the supply, and there are long waiting lists.
The 15 community gardens in the southwest are owned by their respective Boroughs, managed by citizen committees.
They open around May 1 and close after the lots are cleaned up, no later than November 15.
Each community garden consists of a number of small gardens, or plots.
Each person is entitled to only one small garden.
The plot measures about 150 square feet, or 14 m².
Some gardens, such as Charles-Nagy in LaSalle, have small gardens for children.
While waiting for plots to become available in the community garden of their neighborhood, interested individuals can find an alternative by participating in collective gardens.
Unlike the community garden, the collective garden is not divided into individual plots. The land is cultivated collectively, and the harvest is shared among all the gardeners.
