Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante has recently reaffirmed her commitment to the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, prioritizing their well-being over the fluidity of automobile traffic.
Human Safety Before Traffic Flow
Since her election in 2017, the Mayor has implemented several initiatives aimed at transforming urban mobility in the metropolis.
These initiatives include the development of bike lanes, bus-only lanes, and pedestrian infrastructure.
One notable achievement of her administration is the express bike network (REV) on Saint-Denis Street, established in 2020 in response to 300 reported collisions on this artery in less than a decade.
This transformation has reduced accidents and encouraged the use of bicycles as a means of transportation. In fact, up to 24% of trips are now made by bike during the morning rush hour in central
The De Lorimier district, which includes part of the Plateau-Mont-Royal, has fully embraced cycling, with nearly 23.7% of morning trips made on two wheels.
Recent statistics from the Regional Metropolitan Transport Authority (ARTM) show that cycling is gaining ground in the island's central neighbourhoods.
A dozen other areas—in the Plateau, Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie, Verdun, Ville-Marie, Ahuntsic, Villeray, and Hochelaga—show a cycling modal share ranging from 10% to 17% during the morning rush hour.

During a recent city council session, Valérie Plante defended her record on mobility, stating that the safety of people always takes precedence over the fluidity of cars.
She emphasized that collisions involving pedestrians or cyclists are often fatal, and her administration will continue to transform urban mobility by developing more bike lanes and pedestrian infrastructure by the end of her term in November.
This vision for Montreal is one where human safety is paramount, even if it means slowing down automobile traffic.
This approach has already shown positive results and continues to transform the metropolis into a safer and more pleasant space for all its residents.
