In Montreal, parks are not just simple islands of greenery; they are the beating heart of neighborhoods, gathering places that reflect the diversity and needs of the community.

The recent inauguration of Jean-Martucci Park and the major redevelopment of Montcalm Park are telling examples of the City of Montreal's policy to create public spaces that are inclusive, sustainable, and suitable for everyone.

Montcalm Park: A Reworked Oasis of Greenery for All

Recently redeveloped, Montcalm Park, located at the boundary of the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie and Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension boroughs, has been transformed into a true, friendly, and inclusive green oasis.

With a budget of over $4 million, the project aimed to promote biodiversity and universal accessibility.

Among the innovative developments are:

  • A gardening space with raised beds adapted for people with reduced mobility, an initiative that encourages the participation of all residents.

  • An open-air play area, which replaces the former soccer field, and is now a versatile space for spontaneous games and group activities.

  • A bike repair station for cyclists.

  • Biodiversity zones and a water fountain.

The removal of fences around the park and the complete overhaul of the lighting help create a safer and more open space.

Jean-Martucci Park: A Revitalized Community Hub

In the Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough, Jean-Martucci Park is about to be inaugurated after its own redevelopment.

The project, which included a public consultation in 2022, was praised for its ability to meet the specific needs of residents.

The new facilities include:

  • A permanent dog park, a direct response to residents' requests. A temporary pilot project had already demonstrated the strong popularity of this amenity, serving as a gathering place not only for animals but also for their owners.

  • Enhanced play areas for children, as well as a dedicated space for teenagers with a climbing wall and a ping-pong table.

  • A redesigned pathway, and the addition of benches, bike racks, and vegetation, making the park more welcoming and safe

Urban Parks: More Than Just Aesthetics

These two projects perfectly illustrate the crucial role of parks in urban development and community well-being.

Beyond their recreational contribution, modern parks like Montcalm and Jean-Martucci have a significant impact:

  • An economic and real estate boost: Well-maintained green spaces increase the property value of surrounding homes and attract families and local businesses.

  • A social role: They act as "social clubs" where people of all ages and backgrounds can meet, interact, and strengthen their sense of community.

  • Public health: By encouraging physical activity and offering places for relaxation, these parks directly contribute to the physical and mental health of citizens.

By redeveloping its green spaces to be more inclusive, safe, and versatile, the City of Montreal reaffirms its vision of urban planning centered on people and the environment.

These parks are not just new places, but new chapters for neighborhood life.
