An excellent article by Jean-Christophe Laurence of La Presse, « Quand on achète une maison, on ne bouge plus » highlights Montreal's Vietnamese community.
We've added additional statistics and information about this dynamic and well-integrated community.

The Montreal administrative region remains the main attraction, as 49.2% of those admitted from 2012 to 2021 and present in Quebec lived there in January 2023.

The rate, however, varies depending on the year of admission:

Among those admitted from 2012 to 2016, 46.5% resided there in January 2023.

Among those admitted from 2017 to 2021, 52.1% resided there in January 2023;

Statistics from the Government of Quebec showed a 65.3% presence in Montreal.

The Laval region and the Longueuil metropolitan area are also major centers of attraction, with 9.0% and 8.8%, respectively, of people admitted from 2012 to 2021 and present in January 2023.

The Vietnamese population is 13.6% in Montérégie and 8.7% in Laval.

You can find these details in the document further down this page.

In Montreal, the Vietnamese community is dispersed but remains particularly concentrated in the Petite-Patrie area.

This neighborhood, located in a vast quadrilateral formed by Saint-Denis, de Lorimier, Jean-Talon, and Rosemont streets, is home to nearly 4,000 people of Vietnamese origin out of the city's 26,000, including second- and third-generation residents.

Other Statistics:

Vietnamese Population in Montreal: According to the latest data, the Vietnamese community represents approximately 1.5% of Montreal's total population. The majority of this population is concentrated in the Petite-Patrie and Côte-des-Neiges neighborhoods.

Immigration and Integration: The first Vietnamese immigrants arrived in Montreal for their studies in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Since then, the community has continued to grow and integrate, contributing significantly to the city's cultural diversity.

Economy and Employment: Montreal's Vietnamese community is active in various economic sectors, including restaurants, retail, and professional services.

Many community members own and operate local businesses, contributing to the local economy.

The most popular occupations include:

Restaurant: Many members of the Vietnamese community own and operate restaurants, often specializing in Vietnamese cuisine. • Retail: Grocery stores and retail stores are also common among Vietnamese entrepreneurs.

Professional Services: Professional professions such as medicine, law, and engineering are also represented within the Vietnamese community.

Information Technology: A growing number of Vietnamese are working in the information technology sector, particularly as software developers and engineers.

Education and Culture: Children from the Vietnamese community attend local schools and participate in cultural programs that celebrate their Vietnamese heritage. Cultural events, such as Tet (Vietnamese New Year), are held annually to strengthen community ties and preserve traditions.

The Vietnamese community in Montreal, although dispersed, remains strongly rooted in certain neighborhoods such as Petite-Patrie. Their contribution to the city's economic, cultural, and social life is undeniable. By purchasing homes and settling in these neighborhoods, they create stable and vibrant communities that enrich Montreal's urban fabric.
