Spring and summer are magical seasons in Montreal, marked by the return of many species of migratory birds.
Here's an overview of the birds you can expect to see and some of the best places to observe them.
With its 350 bird species, the Montreal region is the most prolific in Quebec. They're easy to spot, often just steps from home, near downtown, in regional parks, on Mount Royal, or on the islands of the St. Lawrence.
In fact, I've already had the great pleasure of observing blackbirds (there's at least one that returns every year to lay its eggs in the same tree near my house and attacks me every time I approach it), Canada geese, and even baby wild geese while walking around the neighborhood.
Birds Returning to Montreal
1. Red-winged Blackbird: This beautiful black bird with red epaulettes has been back in our habitat since the beginning of March.
2. Canada Goose: These large geese, recognizable by their black neck and white breast, also appeared in March.
3. American Robin: This reddish-bellied blackbird is a sure sign of spring, returning to Quebec in April.
4. Snow Goose: These majestic white geese are seen mainly in spring and fall, returning to Quebec in April.
5. Swallow: These small, agile birds arrive in Quebec in May.
The Best Places to Birdwatch in Montreal
Montreal offers many birdwatching sites where you can admire these magnificent creatures:
• Technoparc Montréal: A major birdwatching site, with a wide variety of species.
• Mount Royal: This iconic Montreal park is an excellent place for birdwatching, especially in spring and summer.
• St. Lawrence Islands: The islands offer varied habitats and are ideal for observing migratory birds.
• Cap-Saint-Jacques Nature Park: Located on the west side of the island, this park offers many activities and is an excellent site for birdwatching.
• Île-de-la-Visitation Nature Park: This park allows you to appreciate Montreal's many neighborhoods and spot new bistros or terraces while birdwatching.
We hope the birdwatcher in you will inspire you to get out and enjoy Montreal's natural beauty.
Don't forget to bring your binoculars and camera to capture these unforgettable moments.
Happy birding!
