When I questioned this initiative to my co-owners during a recent information session, and mentioned that in a few years driverless robot cars would be available, I was looked at as if I had arrived from planet Mars.
This reaction is not surprising: a significant mutation in Quebec's automobile fleet is underway. Last year, nearly 50,000 electric vehicles were registered in the province, accounting for 40% of new vehicles.
If the trend continues, Quebecers are on track to meet the goal set by their government: two million electric vehicles on the roads by 2030.
While advocacy groups lament the little funding allocated to public transportation, electric mobility is favored by the State and is doing better than ever.
To meet the demand, the City of Montreal plans to install more than 2,500 public charging stations, at a rate of 200 to 300 per year, of which about 900 are managed by private third parties but accessible to all.
The targeted neighborhoods for the new charging stations include:
Griffintown: This neighborhood features several modern residential projects, such as the Quartier Général building and the Amati complex.
Saint-Laurent: This neighborhood is being developed into a green district, with ecological initiatives and green alleys.
Hochelaga-Maisonneuve: Another neighborhood in the process of being developed into a green area, with projects supported by eco-district programs.
Mercier-East: Located in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough, this neighborhood is also being developed into a green district.
Parc-Extension: Located in the Villeray–Saint-Michel–Parc-Extension borough, this neighborhood is being developed to become a green area.
Côte-des-Neiges/Notre-Dame-de-Grâce South-East: Located in the Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce borough, this neighborhood is being developed to become a green neighborhood.
Plateau-East: Located in the Plateau–Mont-Royal borough, this neighborhood is being developed to become a green neighborhood.
Montérégie: This region, along with Montreal, will receive nearly 40% of the upcoming fast charging stations announced by the government.
Montréal North: This neighborhood recently saw the addition of several buildings with charging stations.
