The long-awaited eastern Montreal tramway project is officially launched.
This ambitious project aims to improve public transportation in the eastern part of the island, connecting several neighborhoods and providing an ecological and efficient alternative for residents.
Project Details
The eastern Montreal tramway plans to develop 38 km of light rail tracks, serving key areas such as Montreal-Nord, Repentigny, Pointe-aux-Trembles, and Montreal-East.
The project will connect to the blue and green lines of the metro network, thereby providing enhanced connectivity and an eco-friendly alternative to car travel.
Calendar
The calendar for the eastern Montreal tramway project is structured into several phases.
March 2025
Preliminary Phase: The Regional Metropolitan Transportation Authority (ARTM) will be responsible for laying the groundwork for the future project.
The organization will have six months, until the end of August 2025, to conduct a market analysis and design the collaborative implementation and procurement strategy.
Fall 2025
Call for Interest: A call for interest will be launched between September and November 2025 to gauge potential suppliers. The government will then be able to specify its needs and initiate dialogue with interested parties.
Beginning 2026
Qualification call: Between January and March 2026, Mobilité Infra Québec will take over by publishing the qualification call, allowing contractors to submit a candidacy file to qualify for the subsequent call for tenders.
Spring 2027
Selection of the construction manager: The selection of the construction manager will take place in spring 2027, marking a concrete step towards the realization of the project.
Benefits
The eastern Montreal tram project will bring many benefits to the community
Improvement of mobility: The tram will offer a fast and efficient public transport alternative, reducing dependence on cars and traffic jams.
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: By promoting public transport, the project will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change.
Economic development: The tram will stimulate economic development in the served neighborhoods, attracting investments and creating jobs.
The official launch of the eastern Montreal tramway project marks an important milestone for the city and its residents.
By providing a modern and environmentally friendly public transport solution, this project will help improve the quality of life for residents and enhance connectivity between the neighborhoods in the eastern part of the island.
