For 40 years, L’Œuvre Soupe Maison (OSM) in Lachine has been providing food services and much more to individuals and families in need.
Founded by Gérard Lefebvre, the organization distributes free meals every week and helps beneficiaries find jobs.

L’Oeuvre Soupe Maison, located at 1170 Notre-Dame Street in Lachine, is a charitable organization that provides free meals to the homeless and disadvantaged population of Lachine.

Founded in 1985, L’Oeuvre Soupe Maison began as a small group of volunteers in a church basement, distributing soup and sandwiches at lunchtime.

Today, with the help of donors, the Moisson Montréal Food Bank, and caring volunteers, the organization feeds an ever-growing number of people.

In 2024, more than 32,000 free meals were distributed, along with 2,231 bags of groceries.

The organization also operates a small thrift store and helps beneficiaries find jobs.

An Inspiring Dedication

It was in 1985 that the OSM's founder, Gérard Lefebvre, began using the premises of the Vieille Brasserie de Lachine to offer sandwiches and bowls of soup to the needy, says current director André Monette.

The organization's honorary president is none other than Robert Piché, the famous pilot of Air Transat Flight 236.

On August 24, 2001, this captain of the Toronto-Lisbon flight landed his plane after a major engine failure and a 20-minute glide, saving the passengers on board.

His story is a source of inspiration for the volunteers who keep the organization running and strengthen the bonds of solidarity within the Lachine community.

Exploding Needs

It wasn't until 2004 that the organization acquired the Notre-Dame Street location to meet growing food needs.

"In 2020, before the pandemic, during busy weeks we had 60 [people]," recalls Mr. Monette, Director, adding, "And then we doubled. During busy weeks we had 120, 125 people. Even at Christmas, I had 165."

Complete Meals: We distribute free complete meals to people who come to our location every Thursday, from September to May. These meals are carefully prepared to ensure they are not only nutritious, but also delicious. In 2024, we distributed over 32,000 free meals.

Food Baskets: In addition to complete meals, we offer food baskets containing essential supplies. Each week, approximately 100 bags of groceries are distributed, enabling beneficiaries to meet their basic food needs.

Preparation of Products for Sale: To support our activities and fund our services, we also prepare products for sale. These products, prepared by our volunteers, are available at affordable prices and contribute to the sustainability of our organization.

Current Needs:

In addition to a lack of resources due to the continued increase in demand, Soupe Maison hopes to be able to accommodate its beneficiaries in better conditions in the future.

There is an urgent need for a larger space to better serve the community.

A shelter building and kitchen equipment are also needed to improve meal preparation and distribution capabilities.
