March 25 marked Greek Independence Day, a holiday celebrated by Greeks around the world.
In Montreal, the local Greek community commemorated the independence war of 1821 with a variety of ceremonies, concluding the celebrations with a parade in Parc-Extension.
The Greek population in Montreal is significant. According to the 2021 census, there are approximately 66,395 Canadians of Greek origin in the Montreal metropolitan area.
This community represents about 1.66% of Montreal's total population.
The Greek community is well integrated and actively contributes to the cultural diversity of the city.
It is represented by the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal (CHGM), which has been serving the Greek population of the greater Montreal area, including Laval and the South Shore, since 1906.
The CHGM has never ceased to represent these proud citizens of Quebec of Greek origin, who settled and continue to settle in this region.
The CHGM organizes various events and activities to celebrate Greek culture, such as the celebrations of Greek Independence Day on March 25.
They gather to celebrate the freedom of Greece after having fought for independence from Ottoman rule for nearly four centuries.
They also offer community services, Greek language courses, and educational and cultural programs to promote and preserve Greek heritage.
This illustrates the importance of this community in the broader context of cultural diversity in Montreal.
