For the first time, McGill University's annual Pow Wow is moving to Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, marking a significant collaboration with John Abbott College.

The 24th annual event, held at Watson Field on September 19, aims to foster community, shared knowledge, and respect for Indigenous traditions.

This new location, which offers improved accessibility and parking, will host a vibrant celebration featuring music, dancing, vendors, and traditional food, all while emphasizing Indigenous values and sustainability.

A new chapter for the annual Pow Wow is beginning as McGill University and John Abbott College unite to co-host the 24th edition.

This year's event, scheduled for September 19, will take place for the first time at Watson Field, located between McGill's Macdonald Campus and John Abbott College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.

This move represents a major step forward, as the collaboration between the two institutions underscores the core Indigenous values of community building, shared knowledge, and respect for the land and tradition.

The change in venue to Montreal's West Island is not merely a logistical decision; it's a strategic choice aimed at making the celebration more accessible and inclusive.

With increased parking availability and proximity to local schools and communities, the new location is expected to draw a larger audience.

To further ensure easy access for all, a free shuttle bus service will operate from downtown Montreal (3415 McTavish St) directly to the Pow Wow grounds (21111 Lakeshore Rd).

This year's event will embrace a more traditional format, diverging from the performance-focused events of previous years.

Attendees can look forward to a full day of cultural celebration, including music, dancing, and a diverse range of vendors selling Indigenous art, jewelry, candles, beauty products, and traditional food.

The social impact of the Pow Wow extends far beyond a single day of celebration.

As an event rooted in Indigenous traditions, it plays a vital role in building community and creating a sense of belonging for Indigenous students.

For those who come from remote communities, these gatherings provide essential networks and a culturally safe environment that helps combat the isolation often felt in an academic setting.

The collaboration also highlights a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Both institutions are involving their respective sustainability offices to ensure the event respects the land on which it is held.

John Abbott's Green Team will work with McGill's sustainability staff to manage waste, composting, and recycling, underscoring the principle that a true Indigenous event must also honour the land.

This partnership serves as a powerful reminder that Indigenous culture is a living, evolving force deeply connected to the community.

By working together, McGill and John Abbott College are not only celebrating culture but also fostering collaboration, resilience, and meaningful relationships in support of Indigenous peoples and their communities.
