Urban agriculture: a booming sector

Commercial urban agriculture is a rapidly growing sector. Locally, it represents:

  1. Over 55 agricultural businesses established in Montreal;

  2. 13% of jobs in the metropolis;

  3. An industry worth over 9 million dollars;

  4. A 30% annual growth in the number of businesses;

  5. Innovative sectors: rooftop gardens, mushroom farming, insect farming, microgreens, greenhouse cultivation, indoor farming, beekeeping, and aquaponics.

City of Montreal – Urban Agriculture Strategy

The City’s Urban Agriculture Strategy aims to promote local food production and adapt agricultural practices to climate change. It supports local greening and food production projects

The strategy outlines four key directions to stimulate and encourage the development of agriculture in the city:

  • Educate, raise awareness, and encourage citizen and community urban agriculture;

  • Increase agricultural production in Montreal and support commercial urban agriculture;

  • Promote resilient and ecological urban agriculture;

  • Improve the management and governance framework of urban agriculture.

This strategy is part of the City’s 2020–2030 Climate Plan.
