On August 30, 2025, the City of Montreal unveiled Pierre-Bédard Park, an innovative development project located in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.

This sponge park, designed to absorb up to 5,700 cubic meters of water, marks a major advancement in the fight against urban flooding and sustainable stormwater management.

In the context of climate change and increasingly intense precipitation, Montreal is showing boldness with the inauguration of Pierre-Bédard Park, the largest sponge park in the metropolis.

This new green space, located in the eastern part of the city, was designed to meet a dual objective: to offer a place of relaxation for citizens while playing an active role in regulating stormwater.

The park can accommodate up to 5,700 cubic meters of water — equivalent to two Olympic-sized swimming pools — thanks to a grassy basin and stone retention walls.

These infrastructures slow down and filter water during heavy rains, thus reducing the risk of flooding in nearby streets.

Among the other developments carried out:

  • Three footbridges to facilitate pedestrian circulation

  • A new electrical network for trail lighting

  • The planting of trees and adapted vegetation

  • Urban furniture made of concrete for user comfort

A combined sewer line will soon complete the system, allowing the park to receive overflows during extreme rainy episodes.

This project, the result of a collaboration between the City of Montreal and the École de technologie supérieure, represents an investment of more than 15 million dollars.

It is part of a sustainable urban planning vision, where green infrastructures become essential tools for climate adaptation.
